The story is built around a mother's undying love for her worthless son, and the attempts of a crippled daughter to obtain love from her parent.

A broad, rollicking slice of English humour clothed in a Lancashire accent. A complicated plot which includes theft, illicit love affairs and murder. The author has also created a cast of equally complicated characters. They include an Irish landlady, an out-of-work actor who isn't an actor, an Indian doctor with a secret, and a dashing Squadron Leader who isn't all he appears to be. The play is spiced with broad humour and there are plenty of laughs.

Ah, Wilderness!

25-29 November, 1958
Nat Miller, owner of the "Evening Globe" . . . Alfred Dunkley
Essie, his wife . . . Gladys Moon
Arthur, their son . . . David Taylor
Richard, their son . . . Norman Billington
Mildred, their daughter . . . Anne Prigmore

Sid Davis . . . Kenneth Orton
Lily Miller . . . Mary Quartermaine

Belle . . . Margaret Kingham
Norah . . . Beryl Odell
Bartender . . . Paul Lawrence
Salesman . . . Tom Weed
Producer . . . Eva Sherratt
"Ah, Wilderness!" can be read in two ways. As a hotch-potch of comedy and cloying sentiment it is hardly O'Neill at his best. As a parody on 1906 Irish-American life and dramatic activity it is wonderfully funny. Ingenuous truths pop out from this rippling comedy with innocent surprise. It is, on the whole, a warm-hearted comforting play.

PLAYS LIST

Bert . . . David Bryant

A dollar-worshipping American manufacturer, whose business flourished while airmen died because of faulty engines turned out in his factory, is mercilessly exposed by his disillusioned son. The play is hinged around the character, or lack of it, of Joe Keller, who allowed his best friend to languish in prison rather than lose a business he had built up to hand over to his son.
